Let’s Be Sure to Give Everyone the Opportunity to Join the Scouts

While we are all winding down for the year and preparing ourselves for a fun-filled summer of camping and activities, please be sure that your unit committee is keeping the fall youth recruitment (FYR) effort on your list of things to work on. The summer is a great time to coordinate with your committee on your unit’s game plan for recruiting time in the Fall.

Josie Petermeier has graciously volunteered to spearhead the FYR effort in 2009. Josie and her committee will be putting on a brief training for effective unit recruitment sometime over the summer. We will send out a notice for that training once the specifics are finalized. Each unit will be expected to have their recruitment chair (or representative) attend to pick up materials and get trained in.

Fall Camporee

Don Richard has agreed to help plan one more Fall Camporee before he moves on. The camporee is tentatively scheduled for the first weekend in October; so please save the date. Don already has some really good ideas for what he wants to do this year, but please let us know if your unit would like to help out or have some input into the event.

FOS

Congratulations to our units that have already achieve (and overachieved) their Friends of scouting goal for 2009. Please make sure that any additional pledges are turned in right away.

Cub Fall Youth Recruitment (FYR)

We continue to strive to offer our fantastic program to 100% of the youth in our community.  Congratulations on a good fall recruiting effort to all of our units who have already reached their membership goals.  If you still have some work to do to achieve you goal or if you just think your Pack could serve more youth, please contact your District Executive, John Knutson (753-231-7224), to discuss options.  There’s still time to bring new youth into your unit!

Fall Boy Scout Recruiting

Boy Scout recruiting materials are still available. The council membership committee will provide support to Boy Scout Troops with membership recruiting resource packets.  The primary recruiting period to conduct a troop open house recruiting event is September – October. Recruiting support materials will include: posters, fliers, youth survey and recruiting “best methods” to help increase troop membership.  Contact your District Executive, John Knutson for more help.

Popcorn

Selling popcorn is the easiest way to make sure that our families don’t have to struggle to pay for Scouting activities and materials.  To make sure you’re keeping on track to have a successful sale this year, here is the timeline:

·  Oct 3 - SALE BEGINS.

·  Nov 1 - SALE ENDS - Unit popcorn chair collects orders from Scouts.

·  Nov 4 - Opportunity to return excess “Show and Deliver” product to Council Return Centers.

·  Nov 6 - ORDERS DUE--Unit Take Order popcorn and prize orders due via online system

·  Nov 19-20 - Units pick up popcorn at district distribution locations

·  Dec 11 - Money due to Council Service Center (retail, minus your unit commission). One check please!

Questions about the sale can be forwarded to Mustang Popcorn Chair, Mark Arvidson at mljjkarv@comcast.net.

Friends of Scouting

Our annual Friends of Scouting campaign is right around the corner.  Please be working with your unit committees to plan for a time at your best-attended winter event to have a presentation about Friends of Scouting.  There will be a training for FOS at the November Roundtable.

Starting New Packs, Troops and Crews

In order to remain a Quality District, it is important that we’re always looking or opportunities to expand our service area.  In particular, there is plenty of room for expansion in our Venturing program.  Having a Venturing Crew for older Scouts to graduate into from a Troop is a great way to keep boys active in Scouting.  If you have a location where you think a new unit would be viable, please contact District Executive, John Knutson for assistance.  Volunteers that help start a new unit using the 12 step process are eligible for the William D. Boyce Knot. Details on the award and knot can be found on the council website.
